US National Coeliac Awareness Day

Tuesday 13th September 2011, Events

Earlier this year, the US Senate passed a resolution which designated 13th September 2011 as National Coeliac Awareness Day.

In the Genius office we’ve been celebrating the day which got us to thinking why 13th September? Is it just a random date? The answer is no! It is the birthday of Dr Samuel Gee, a pioneer in coeliac disease research, who was born on 13th September 1839.

Dr Samuel Gee was an English physician and paediatrician and it was during Gee’s work at Great Ormond Street Hospital when he made the first modern-day description of coeliac disease in 1887. However, Dr Gee couldn’t put his finger on the cause but does state "if the patient can be cured at all, it must be by means of diet." Moving on 124 years and we now know that coeliac disease is an autoimmune reaction to gliadin, a gluten protein found in wheat.

In passing the resolution, the Senate declared that "all people of the United States should become more informed and aware of celiac disease" and wanted US citizens to embrace the day and get involved in activities within their communities.
